River course
The Río Huancané has its source in a ridge in the north of the Muñani district ( Azángaro province ) at an altitude of about 4700 m . In the upper reaches it is called Río Guanaco and Río Tarucani , in the middle reaches Río Putina . It flows in a predominantly south-southeast direction through the mountainous region of the provinces of San Antonio de Putina and Huancané . At river kilometer 70 the Río Pongongoni flows into the river on the left near the provincial capital Putina . At river kilometer 40, near the village of Huatasani , the Río Tuyto meets the river coming from the southeast. This reaches the lowlands northwest of Lake Titicaca . At river kilometer 12, the provincial capital Huancané is one kilometer east of the river. The Río Huancané finally flows into the Río Ramis, 8 km above its confluence with Lake Titicaca.
Hydrology
The Río Huancané drains an area of 3545 km² in the provinces of Azángaro, San Antonio de Putina and Huancané. A large part of the annual runoff occurs in the first quarter with an average runoff of around 50 m³ / s. During floods , the discharge can be over 145 m³ / s. Especially in the summer months, the river carries only little water, on average about 2 m³ / s. The catchment area borders on that of the Río Suches to the east and that of the Río Ramis to the north and west.
