The thriller with fantasy elements is a film adaptation of the Belgian graphic novel of the same name by Anne Baltus , François Schuiten and Benoît Peeters and is about a model builder who falls in love with a famous film actress.

action

Stuttgart, in the 1950s. The model maker Georg Letterer lives with his diabetic and lazy brother Franz. You have little money, an attachment and eviction is imminent. One day, the famous film actress Dolores Moor had a flat tire in front of his house in the pouring rain. Georg invites her in and in the meantime takes care of the car.

The actress is impressed by his perfect and detailed works, so that he gets the order from her to model her villa. She wants to move to Hollywood, but is very attached to the Bauhaus-style building because it was designed by her late father, an architect. She offers Georg to move into the villa for his work during her absence. He could also bring his brother with him, which Georg does not tell him because it is a welcome opportunity for him to escape from Franz, who takes advantage of his illness and lives at Georg's expense.

Georg moves into the villa and begins meticulously measuring it. The materials should also be the same as in reality so that it becomes an exact representation of reality. There should also be true-to-scale miniature versions of the residents of the house. During his work Georg is being watched critically by the chauffeur Anton, because he fears, based on previous experiences, that Georg only wants to take advantage of Dolores and enrich himself. Simone, the manager of Dolores, falls in love with Georg and starts an affair with him. In contrast, he is increasingly fascinated only by his work and by his client.

By chance, Georg discovers that he can manipulate the physical reality in the villa using his model. Objects that he shifts in his model also shift in reality. So he lets the chauffeur have an accident and Dolores 'American co-star and lover land rudely on the floor when he makes derogatory comments about the model during Dolores' birthday party.

Suddenly Georg's brother appears at the birthday party and learns that Dolores had offered that he could move into the villa. He leaves the party furious and collapses on the way home. But Georg ignores the doctor's instructions that his brother needs intensive care, so that Franz dies after a while.

Over time, Georg becomes more and more obsessed and uses his magical ability more and more. With a lighter and the corresponding doll, he causes his American rival to suffer severe burns when he is in the bathroom, so that he will never be able to make a film again. When Simone notices that Georg wants to make a second Dolores out of her with clothes, jewelry and hairstyle, she wants to throw him out. However, he lets a wall fall over in the model, so that the real equivalent of Simone collapses and kills her. He drowns the investigator, who eventually gets on his way, in the water basin in front of the house by pushing his figure in the model under water.

After all, there is only he and Dolores left. In order to own her, he largely shields her from the public by pretending to be her agent and manager. He sifts through their film offerings, which are becoming less and less due to their advanced age by industry standards, and the quality of the scripts leaves more and more to be desired. When the script for the Sissi film adaptation flutters into the house, he initially does not tell her that she is intended for the role of the Queen Mother and not, as she assumes, the title role.

Finally, Dolores discovers the truth about Georg and his model. He has also duplicated miniature movie posters distributed around the house, substituting his name for the real co-star. Dolores wants to flee, but with his model he blocks all exits with concrete walls. He promises to release Dolores if she helps him with the final touch to finish the work on the miniature villa, the laying of the roof. When that is done, the exits open again and Dolores wants to escape immediately. But she is horrified to discover that with the completion of the model, the garden and everything around the real villa has disappeared and there is only an abyss of white nothing.
