history

View into the stadium

The Don Valley Stadium in Sheffield , an English town in the county of South Yorkshire , was built in 1990 and opened in September of the same year. Just a year after the stadium opened, the first competition took place here, the 1991 Summer Universiade . Also in 1991, it became the home of the Sheffield Eagles rugby club for the first time . The Eagles have won the Rugby League Challenge Cup once and were once champions of the second English rugby league division. In 2009, the Eagles announced that they would play their home games for the coming season, starting in 2010, on Bramall Lane , which the Sheffield United football club also uses for home games. In addition to the rugby league , football matches were also held at the Don Valley Stadium. Rotherham United's first league game at this stadium was a 1-0 win over Lincoln City FC on Matchday 1 of the 2008/09 season, at the end of which Rotherham won promotion to the Don Valley Stadium with a 0-1 win against Exeter City Football League One only missed in the play-offs.

Originally from Sheffield Jessica Ennis , Olympic champion in the heptathlon in London in 2012, trained at the Don Valley Stadium.

Concerts were also held regularly at Don Valley Stadium. So already played here Michael Jackson , The Rolling Stones , the Spice Girls , Celine Dion , the Red Hot Chili Peppers , Ugly Kid Joe and U2 . For concerts, the capacity of the Don Valley Stadium was increased to 50,000 seats.

In March 2011 the plans for the new New York Stadium of Rotherham United with 12,000 seats were presented. Work began in June 2011 and the inauguration took place around a year later on July 21, 2012. With that, Rotherham left Don Valley Stadium after four years.

Due to austerity measures in the city's public budget and high maintenance costs, Sheffield City Council announced the closure and demolition of the stadium in January 2013. The demolition was decided in a city council meeting on March 1, 2013. To replace the track and field athletes, Woodburn Road Athletics Stadium was renovated for £ 325,000 and reopened in October 2013. The stadium was closed in September and demolition work began on November 21, 2013. A University Technical College (UTC) is being built on the stadium grounds for £ 10 million , the city council decided on August 6, 2014. It will be the second school of its kind in the city after the UTC Sheffield opens in 2013. Specializing in human sciences and digital technology , the UTC will have space for 600 students between the ages of 14 and 19. UTC is supported by Sheffield College and Sheffield Hallam University .
