Building history

The construction date of the first church building in the village of Bensdorf, which was renamed Altbensdorf in the 19th century, has not been passed down. However, it is believed that the previous building of the Altbensdorf village church was between 1200 and 1250. It was made of brick and had the typical tripartite Romanesque village church of the Middle Ages with a nave , choir and apse . It was relatively low at about ten to eleven feet . The church windows are said to have been structurally changed to pointed arch windows . Entrances were on the south and north sides (to the patron's box ). The patron's box was on the north side of the choir on the ground floor. This was heated and had its own entrance and window. The pulpit was from the patron's box to the ship. The first Protestant pastor of Bensdorf after the Reformation was a Martinus Saul. In the 17th century, a church tower was mentioned that was built on the classic on the west side of the ship. It consisted of timber framework . A larger and a smaller bell hung in the tower. Between 1695 and 1702 there was construction work on the choir. In 1702, the smaller of the two bells had to be cast by a bell caster Otto Ehlers from Berlin due to a break. In 1719 the church tower was completely repaired or replaced. The construction project was financed proportionately by the patronage family of Britzke and by the community. Even after the renovation, the tower was made of timber framework. It was covered with grit and had a tower ball . The church roof was covered with roof tiles. The interior of the church was unpaved except for the area around the altar . In 1737 the first church tower clock was purchased. In 1791 the tower was again extensively repaired.

Organ in the village church

On the night of September 21-22, 1810, a major fire broke out in Bensdorf, in which around a third of the village was destroyed. The church also burned to the ground . The entire church treasure was also destroyed. At the end of 1819 to 1920, the construction of the church began. The foundation walls were used for construction. The church was given a height of 17 feet. The village church was consecrated on November 12, 1820. A new tower clock was purchased in 1835. The clockmaker was a Hollinger from Brandenburg an der Havel . It cost the community 144 thalers . In December 1854 the spire was renewed. A renovation of the interior of the church took place in 1872 and in 1875 an organ was purchased for 550 thalers. The master organ builder was Robert Voigt from Stendal . Around 1907 the village church was renovated again. After the First World War , memorial plaques for the fallen parishioners were installed on the southern outer wall. In the following decades only a few repairs were carried out from 1962 to 1964, maintenance work on the roof structure and roof was carried out primarily in- house . 6000 marks were spent.

In 1976 the last pastor from Altbensdorf was recalled. The previously independent parish came with Neubensdorf and Vehlen first to the Nitzahn parish and then to the Genthin parish . Altbensdorf has been part of the Wusterwitz parish office since 1989 . In 1998/99 the church was extensively renovated using public funds.

Building

The village church Altbensdorf is a simple, classical plastered building. The classic tripartite division between nave, choir and apse was retained. The windows are tall rectangular lattice windows . They are covered with white glass. On the ship there are massive buttresses at the northwest and southwest corners and on both sides between the first and second window . Another buttress stands to the east at the apse. An eaves cornice is slightly profiled. There is a portal in the southern wall of the choir . It is outlined in a profiled manner. The door is single-leaf. The main portal is to the west in the tower. It shows the same border as the south portal. The door is double-leaf. A fighter window is located above this . The tower is two-story with sound arcades for the bells in all four directions. He has a flat pyramid roof on which an octagonal spire sits. Both are covered with metal sheets. The top is marked by a weather vane , a tower ball and a cross. The roofs over the nave and choir are pitched roofs that are covered with red beaver tails . The roof over the semicircular apse is a half- conical roof also covered with beaver tails .
