Building description and history

Tower dome with lantern, cross and weather vane.

In Löhsten there was originally a wooden church built in 1500, which was dedicated to Saints John and Barbara. In the 16th century it was a branch of the church in Döbrichau .

The Herzberger Superintendent Dr. Benjamin Gottlieb Clemens and the Kreischauer court administrator Johann Carl Lehmann suggested the construction of a new church in Löhsten at the Wittenberg Consistory on September 15, 1770 . The reason for this was the extremely bad state of disrepair and the bad appearance of the old church and the tower, which were built from nothing but wood, without a single stone, clay or lime. This church is a nuisance to all foreign passers-by. The parish in Löhsten would only consist of 16 men and their families, but they were convinced of the need for a new church and tower and had already collected the first money for it among themselves. Construction plans and a crack in the new church were submitted to the consistory at the same time. They first wanted to know what the construction costs were to be paid for. After this had been explained in detail by the superintendent and court administrator, the Wittenberg Consistory approved the construction of the new church in Löhsten on November 21, 1770.

However, the new building was delayed due to the rise in prices in the Electorate of Saxony, which also hit the residents of Löhsten hard, so that initially insufficient funds were available for building the church. So it was not started until the spring of 1777, whereby instead of a continuous stone construction the decision was made for the cheaper half-timbered construction . It is a rectangular hall building with a three-sided east end. In the west of the nave there is an initially square church tower in the form of a roof turret . The tower merges into the octagonal at the height of the roof ridge and has a tail hood and lantern. In the west of the building there is a vestibule.

As early as November 1777, the new church in Löhsten could be inaugurated with an edifying sermon by the new Herzberg superintendent. On this occasion, the innkeeper of the tavern in Löhsten, Johann Christian Schurath, honored two pewter candlesticks with yellow wax candles for the altar.

Equipment (selection)

The interior of the church is characterized by a flat plastered ceiling and a horseshoe gallery located here. Other pieces of equipment include a chalice-shaped wooden baptism and a pulpit altar from the 18th century . The bell in the church is made of bronze and dates from the beginning of the 14th century .

Furthermore, in the church is an organ of the presumably from Dresden originating organ builder Kauffmann from the time to find around 1800, where the origin is not clear yet, however. The organ has eight stops on a manual and a pedal with a mechanical slide .

The Church in Löhsten now belongs to the parish Rehfeld in the parish of Bad Liebenwerda the Evangelical Church in Central Germany . In addition to Rehfeld and Löhsten, the parish also includes Züllsdorf , Beyern , Fermerswalde and Kölsa .

Dunning and remembrance

Immediately in front of the church is a memorial to the victims of the villagers who died in the First and Second World Wars . The monument consists of a stele on a five-tiered base . On the sides there are name boards and on the front a board with the inscription “In memory of the victims of both world wars” .
