Nightmare Lover ( Dream Lover ) is an American thriller by Nicholas Kazan from the year 1994 .

action

Ray Reardon is the owner of an architectural practice. He recently got a divorce and is depressed; his friends cheer him up.

Reardon meets Lena Mathers, with whom he falls in love. He and Mathers get married and later they have a child. Some events suggest that Lena may be having an affair. Ray confronts his wife and learns that she really was having an affair. Your child could be from her lover. Reardon beats up his wife, is arrested, declared incompetent, and sent to a mental hospital for a few months.

Lena visits Ray in the clinic to enjoy his helpless situation and to mock him. She admits she married Ray to get his money. The child wants to give her up for adoption and then live a carefree life with his money. Little does she suspect that Ray has meanwhile thought about how he can turn the tables: with the help of a fellow patient, he distracts the carers in order to be alone with Lena. He tells her it was a mistake to declare him insane because it would kill her with impunity. Then he kills Lena.

Reviews

James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that the film is different from the other thrillers. Known situations ("stock situations") would lead to unfamiliar actions of the characters. The second half of the film is "much stronger" than the first. The acting performance of James Spader was "uneven", but "overall convincing" ("generally convincing"). The girl Amick has a pleasant appearance, but her portrayal is weaker.

The lexicon of international films wrote: “Cleverly designed psychological thriller about a gender battle down to the knife; annoying the misogynistic undertones. "

Awards

Girl Amick was nominated for the Saturn Award in 1995 .
