The Plothener ponds are an area of ponds in the Saale-Orla district in Thuringia . They mainly extend to Plothen , Knau and Dreba and are part of the Thuringian Slate Mountains / Obere Saale Nature Park . The area is designated as a nature reserve Dreba-Plothener pond area.
The first ponds were created by monks in the Middle Ages . Over time, many smaller ponds were merged into larger ones. Today the largest pond is the house pond with an area of 28 hectares. Such pond systems were created to meet the great demand for fish that existed due to the numerous fasting days . Pond systems such as the Plothener ponds are a form of intensive pond management in the pre-industrial era. Some of them were used in a so-called field-pond change economy . Today they are only used extensively and are important for preserving biodiversity . Within a radius of 5 km there were 1,600 ponds close together, of which around 600 are still present today, which is why the area is also known as the "land of a thousand ponds".
During the GDR era, the landscape was badly damaged: by pig fattening systems that separated the manure from 185,000 animals at high times . The waters were spoiled, trees died, and numerous animal species were driven from their habitat.
After being renatured , the ponds are now a regional tourist attraction again and are particularly popular with anglers and cyclists . A rich flora and fauna is at home here. Birds such as grebes , plover , coot , snipe , osprey and Milan and a variety of songbirds can be found here. This area is not only a habitat, but also an internationally important resting place for migratory birds. An attraction is the starling wonder at the time of bird migration , when thousands of starlings and other migratory birds gather at the ponds .
The landmark of the Plothener pond area is the approximately 300-year-old stilt house in the Hausteich, which houses a small museum.
