Dudley Ryder, 2nd Earl of Harrowby KG PC FRS (* 19th May 1798 in London , † 19th November 1882 in Sandon , Staffordshire ) one was a British politician , who for 27 years a member of the House of Commons was, and in 1847 a member of the House of Lords . He served as Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster in 1855 and as Lord Seal Keeper from 1855 to 1858 . He was also President of the Royal Statistical Society several times .

Family origin

Ryder was the fifth of eight children and the eldest son of Secretary of State and longtime Lord President of the Council Dudley Ryder , who inherited the title of 2nd Baron of Harrowby in 1803 and was promoted to 1st Earl of Harrowby in 1809, and Lady Susan Leveson -Gower, a daughter of Granville Leveson-Gower, 1st Marquess of Stafford , who was also Lord Seal Keeper and Lord President of the Council twice, as well as Lord Chamberlain of the Household .

His eldest sister Louisa Elizabeth Ryder was married to a son of Hugh Fortescue, 1st Earl Fortescue , George Matthew Fortescue , who represented the constituency of Hindon as a member of the House of Commons from 1826 to 1831 . His second oldest daughter was the wife of the clergyman Lord Charles Amelius Hervey , a son of Frederick Hervey, 1st Marquess of Bristol . The third oldest daughter Lady Mary Ryder was the wife of Admiral Admiral Edward Saurin, while his fourth oldest daughter Lady Susan Ryder married the eldest son of Hugh Fortescue, 1st Earl Fortescue, Hugh Fortescue, 2nd Earl Fortescue . He was also a member of the House of Commons for 31 years, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland from 1839 to 1841 and Lord Steward of the Household from 1846 to 1850 .

His younger brother Granville Dudley Ryder also represented the Conservative Tories intermittently for eight years as a MP in the House of Commons and was the husband of Lady Georgiana Augusta Somerset, daughter of Henry Somerset, 6th Duke of Beaufort . Ryder graduated from Christ Church at the University of Oxford and was elected to the House of Commons for the first time on July 6, 1819 at the age of 21, in which he represented the Tiverton constituency until July 25, 1831 . During his parliamentary membership he was also from 1830 to 1831 Secretary of the Right Honorable Board of Commissioners for the Affairs of India responsible for the administration of interests in British India and the British East India Companies .

After a brief hiatus, he was re-elected to the House of Commons on December 10, 1831 and represented the constituency of Liverpool until July 29, 1847 .

Prime Minister Henry Temple, 3rd Viscount Palmerston appointed him on March 31, 1855 as successor Granville Leveson-Gower, 2nd Earl Granville as Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster (Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster) in its first cabinet. In 1859 he was inducted into the Order of the Garter , the most exclusive order in the United Kingdom and one of the most prestigious in Europe. He also served temporarily as Tiverton’s high steward and governor of the traditional, elite Charterhouse School .

Marriage and offspring

On September 15, 1823, Ryder married Lady Frances Stuart, a daughter of John Stuart, 1st Marquess of Bute , who was two times Lord Lieutenant of the County of Glamorgan and Lord Lieutenant of the County of Bute . From this marriage two sons were born.

After his death on November 19, 1882, his eldest son Dudley Francis Stuart Ryder inherited the title of 3rd Earl of Harrowby and the subordinate title and thus a member of the House of Lords. Previously, he was for years a member of the House of Commons and between 1878 and 1880 Minister of Commerce (President of the Board of Trade) and from 1885 to 1886 also Lord Seal Keeper.

However, since the 3rd Earl died childless on March 26, 1900, Dudley Ryder's second son and brother of the 3rd Earl, Henry Dudley Ryder , inherited the title of 4th Earl of Harrowby and the subordinate titles and thus became a member of the House of Lords. This was as a private banker and partner of the private bank & Coutts . However, he died a few months later on December 11, 1900, so that his son, the previous House of Commons John Herbert Dudley Ryder the title of 5th Earl of Harrowby.
