Duel in Diablo is an American western directed by Ralph Nelson from 1965. The plot is based on the novel Apache Rising by Marvin H. Albert .

action

Ellen Grange was held captive by the Apaches for over a year. The scout Jess Remsberg saves the woman and takes her to see her husband Willard in Fort Creel. But he reproaches her for not killing herself when she was captured. Ellen leaves the fort the following night.

The next morning, a group of recruits, led by Lieutenant McAllister, set out for Fort Concho. Remsberg accompanies the troop as a scout. He is looking for his wife's murderer, a Comanche who was killed and scalped by an unknown white man. Grange, who wants to bring a load of goods to Fort Concho, and Toller, a black ex-cavalryman who now works as a horse dealer, also accompany the soldiers.

When Remsberg rides ahead to explore the area, he finds Ellen in an Apache camp. When he takes her back with him, he sees that she has a child with her. She explains to him that the child is her son. The father is the son of the chief Chata. When Remsberg and Ellen return to the troops, they discover that the Apaches, led by Chata, have ambushed the soldiers. There have been deaths and the water supplies are running low. Remsberg can outsmart the Apaches and take the survivors to Diablo Canyon, where there is fresh water.

Remsberg rides alone to Fort Concho to get reinforcements. There he learns that his wife's murderer is Willard Grange. Remsberg hurries ahead of the reinforcements to the canyon. The Apaches attacked the soldiers when Remsberg intervened in the fight. McAllister is killed and Grange captured. During the night, the survivors hear Granges shrill screams as the Apaches torture him.

When reinforcements arrive, the Indians give up. Remsberg, Toller, Ellen and four soldiers are the only survivors. Remsberg looks for Grange and finds him tied to a wagon wheel, hanging over glowing coals. The dying man asks Remsberg to shoot him. Remsberg gives him his revolver and leaves. There is a loud shot behind him. The Indians go into captivity, Chata says goodbye to his grandson, with whom Ellen, together with Remsberg, joins the soldiers.

Reviews

For the lexicon of international film , Duel in Diablo is “a carefully staged, suspenseful western that deals marginally with the racial problem.” Yet this is precisely where Joe Hembus sees the problem of the film: “Ralph Nelson offers too much of everything, and most of it becomes too original for him. Sidney Poitier's horse trainer is already so integrated that no one even seems to notice that he is a colored man, while the white and red race problem is so complex that credibility is completely neglected. "

The film magazine Cinema sums it up as follows: "Tightly staged, hard action western"

Variety says there is enough fast action packed into the film to please fans of the genre. The successful production keeps the tension going for a long time, and the fight is well staged.

Awards
