Werkendam ( listen ? / I ) was a municipality in the Netherlands , province of Noord-Brabant . It had a total area of ​​124.7 km², of which about 10% was water. The Werkendam community included:

Location and economy

The municipality formed the western part of the so-called Land van Heusden en Altena , between Dordrecht , which lies beyond the Nieuwe Merwede , in the north-west and Heusden in Noord-Brabant in the south, which lies beyond the Bergsche Maas . The A27 Utrecht - Breda motorway crosses the municipality in a north-south direction. The northeastern neighboring municipality, Gorinchem , has the nearest train station (from there 5 km by bus to Werkendam).

Werkendam has some large inland ports that are mainly equipped for the maintenance and repair of Rhine and other inland waterways. Werkendam is also the home of many dredgers . In the other parts of the municipality, agriculture and water sports tourism are particularly important.

history

Werkendam was built in the middle of the 13th century, by a small river De Werken , which may have been created by waterworks. Most of the village burned down in 1641. Werkendam, conveniently located on the river between Rotterdam and the Ruhr area , has always been a village of boatmen, and in the past also of fishermen and rush tailors. In the 20th century, the craft of dredging inland waters and outer harbors was added.

Dussen was built around the castle, which was built in 1393. The village and castle were destroyed in the flood disaster of 1421. In 1456 the castle, which was inhabited by local lords of the Van der Dussen family, was restored. Dussen was an independent municipality until 1997, the castle served as the town hall from 1954 to 1997.

In the winter of 1944/45 the battle of the Kapelsche Veer between the Wehrmacht and Allied troops took place nearby .
