The ETA Elektrotechnische Apparate GmbH is a globally operating family company based in Altdorf . The company, founded in 1948 , is the world market leader in device circuit breakers and a supplier of system solutions in the fields of protection, switching and monitoring.

history

The company was founded in 1948 by Jakob Ellenberger and Harald Arthur Poensgen in Altdorf near Nuremberg, where production started in August of the same year. In 1955 the company expanded to the USA , and in 1957 to Canada . In 1969 the electronics division was established. Then Horst Ellenberger, Carl Horst Poensgen and William F. Sell took over the management. There has been a branch in Austria since 1998. In 2006 Bernd Ellenberger succeeded his father as managing director. In 2007 a branch was established in Russia and in 2008 a plant in Indonesia.

The steady growth in sales and employee development (see table) was followed by a break in the positive corporate development caused by the global economic crisis in 2007, which was reflected in both sales and employment in the company in 2009. In 2009 there was a decrease in sales of 32% and a decrease in the number of employees by 152 to 785 employees. In 2009, 1220 people were employed worldwide; the foreign share of sales in 2009 was 67%. Investments and engagement in Asia are to be expanded further, particularly in Japan and China. ETA only achieved a third of its sales of 90 million in 2014 (2013: 85 million) in Germany, with the company generating the majority abroad. On October 31, 2014, Philip Poensgen, from the third generation of the family business, retired from the company as managing director. The company is then continued by Clifford Sell as sole managing director. The company shares of the Poensgen family were taken over by the remaining shareholder families . The company employs 1414 people worldwide (as of December 31, 2014), 551 of them in Altdorf and 161 in Hohenfels in Upper Palatinate . ETA has six production sites and 13 sales offices of its own. There are subsidiaries in Belgium, France, Great Britain, Italy, Japan, Austria, Singapore, Spain and the USA. A subsidiary in Australia and offices in China and Thailand have been new since 2005.
