history

The village of Earl Shilton is already mentioned in the so-called Domesday Book under the name Sheltone , which roughly means a settlement on a hill . In 1130 Robert de Beaumont, 2nd Earl of Leicester founded a moth and moat on the site , which were built to protect the valley of Kirkby. The motte remained as a fortress for another thirty to forty years and was then gradually converted into a hunting lodge . From 1239 Simon de Montfort, 6th Earl of Leicester, had his seat in the Earl Shilton Castle and used the nearby Shilton Forest as a place for hunting. The name extension Earl also comes from this time . After Simon de Montfort's death in 1265, the area became the property of Edmund Crouchback, 1st Earl of Lancaster . Fifteen years later, the place received village rights. In 1297 the property was a little smaller than 2.5 square kilometers and consisted of a castle surrounded by a red brick wall.

In 1444 King Henry VI. the area to his intended wife. From 1564 it is known that only ten families lived in Earl Shilton because there were disputes with the landowners. Fifty years later, in 1611, the plague broke out in the town, killing 21 people. In 1758, a building known as Pinfold was built in the village , which was built to keep cattle out of the fields and later used as a place to weigh stones from a local quarry. According to a parliamentary resolution from 1778, all open lands had to be fenced in; the area was later used as a route for steeplechase races and as a location for circus events. In 1800 the place consisted of 249 houses with 1287 inhabitants, of which 118 worked in agriculture and 716 in trade with or in the manufacture of stockings. In the same year a Dutch windmill was built near the quarry for 800 pounds sterling , which lasted a good hundred years, was damaged first by lightning and later by a storm and was demolished in 1917.

In 1822 a Wesleyan chapel was built in Earl Shilton , and five years later the parish already had 290 members. In 1825 a congregational church was established. From 1830 Earl Shilton was a stopping point for stagecoaches that drove between Hinckley and Birmingham or Leicester . A year later, 2017 people lived in Earl Shilton. In the 1840s, however, the population became impoverished and either decided to look for work in Hinckley or became a criminal. Nevertheless there were 650 hosiery chairs in Earl Shilton in 1844, the number of which then gradually decreased. From 1850 Job Toon built up his textile company J. Toon and Son in Earl Shilton , in 1854 one of the churches was rebuilt and was named St. Simon and St. Jude .

In 1859 the local workers went on strike. After the beginning of the Civil War in 1861, no more cotton could be delivered to Earl Shilton, unemployment rose immensely. Five years later, a gas works was built in Earl Shilton , followed by a school called Wood Street School in 1871 , which had to be expanded in 1907 due to space problems. In 1908 a Catholic church was established in Earl Shilton, followed by the Sociale Institute in 1909 , which was intended to give the young population in particular an activity in their free time. A Catholic school was also established in 1910 before over a thousand Earl Shilton men moved into World War I in 1914 . Another school was built in 1937, before several air raid shelters were built from 1940 during the Second World War . In the same year two Luftwaffe bombs hit the north of the town as part of the Battle of Britain ; also because a bomb did not explode, there were no victims. In 1942 the place was hit again by three bombs, this time destroying a barn and damaging a house.

After the end of the war there were considerable space problems in the Wood Street School from 1965 , so that in some cases it was switched to a local community center. In 1984, however, the school burned down and was demolished as a result. In 2005 the population exceeded 9,000, and in 2011 it was 10,047. A bypass road was built in 2009.
