Everigisil (us) , also Evergislus or Eberigisil , (* in Tongeren ?; † around 594 ibid?) Was the fifth bishop of Cologne and, according to Heriger von Lobbes , is also said to have been the fifteenth bishop of Maastricht .

Everigisil received his theological training in Cologne . He was the first bishop of Cologne to have a name of Franconian origin. Everigisil was mentioned several times by Gregory of Tours as Bishop of Cologne, but since he always uses the past tense, a death before 594 must be assumed. Gregory of Tours (Libri miraculorum I 61) connects him with the first mention of the cult of the martyrs of the Theban Legion in Cologne, which, according to his own report, is said to have cured him of headaches. One can assume that Everigisil promoted their cult, perhaps even founded it.

During his tenure as Bishop of Cologne he is said to have built a church in Birten near Xanten in honor of St. Mallosus . However, this building can no longer be proven archaeologically today. Medieval sources also contain his participation in a meeting called by King Childebert II . Everigisil was known and loved by the people for his diplomatic skills.

According to medieval sources, the day of his death is said to have been September 14th. It is said that Everigisil died a martyr's death either in Tongeren or in a place called Trutmonia ( Dortmund ?) . In 955, Archbishop Brun of Cologne transferred the alleged remains of Everigisil from Tongeren (or Trutmonia) to Cologne. The bones of Everigisil were then exhibited and venerated in a precious shrine in the St. Cäcilien Church in Cologne . In 1802, when Cecilia was no longer a collegiate church, the bones were transferred to St. Peter , where they are still in the lattice chapel today . The gold fittings of the reliquary chest, which were confiscated during the French era , were replaced with gold-plated brass fittings in 1837. When the shrine was last opened in January 2012 (with forensic doctor Karl-Heinz Schiwi-Bochat), bones of two people were found next to textile remains. A document issued by Albertus Magnus in 1270 attests to one of the many earlier openings (most recently in 1889) .

Saint Everigisil is the patron saint of glaziers and the Cologne painters' guild . The saint's feast day is October 24th.

Two Catholic parish churches are consecrated to him in the Archbishopric of Cologne: St. Evergislus in Bornheim - Brenig and St. Evergislus in Plittersdorf .

As part of the redesign of the sculpture program for the Cologne town hall tower in the 1980s, Everigisil was honored with a figure by Walter Hutz on the fourth floor on the east side of the tower.
