The Echinades ( Greek Εχινάδες Echinádes ( f. Pl. )) Are an uninhabited group of islands off the west coast of Etoloakarnania and a subgroup of the Ionian Islands .
The islands are mentioned as Echinades ( Ἐχινάδες ) by ancient authors such as Strabo, Herodotus and Thucydides, and by Homer as Echinai ( Ἐχῖναι ). In ancient times, five islands were counted among the Echinaden, the origin of which was traced back to four mythical nymphs, the Echinaden , and Perimele , a lover of the river god Acheloos , who was transformed into an island by Poseidon at his request. Already in ancient times, these islands , which are located directly in front of the mouth of the Acheloos, were silted up by the river's mud wash.
The archipelago, now called Echinaden, encompassing a little over twenty islands and a few small rocks, extends from the Acheloos estuary north along the coast to the Bay of Astakos. The islands are rocky and sparsely overgrown, the highest point is at 417 m above sea level. d. M. on Oxia . The silting process in the Acheloos Delta continues; the largest of the islands with around 6 km², Petalas , is now connected to the mainland by alluvial deposits. The archipelago is divided into two subgroups: The northern group is called Drakoneres (Δρακονέρες), from it the island Modi and three small islands north of it are combined to the subgroup Modia (Μόδια).
Administratively, the islands belong to the Ionian Islands region . The southern islands as well as Drakonera and Karlonisi are on the territory of the municipality of Ithaka , while the other islands belong to the municipality of Pylaros of the municipality of Sami on Kefalonia . Many of the islands are privately owned and are occasionally available for purchase.
