The Eckenheimer depot (also: Wagenhalle Eckenheim , formerly depot corner home ) is since 1911 a custodian of the Frankfurt streetcar . Immediately to the east of the depot is the “Schwabstraße” stop , which is only used by a few intermittent courses on the U5 line.

history

The in Schwabstraße 16 in Frankfurt District Eckenheim depot location was established in 1911 inaugurated and has 30 covered tracks , some of which can be protected from the weather closed. The installation area of the depot was considerably expanded in 1956 by partially removing the rear wall of the hall and lengthening the tracks to the open-air area behind it.

The Eckenheim depot was the only tram depot in the city of Frankfurt that survived the air raids on Frankfurt am Main in World War II without damage. The railcar and the sidecar of the Frankfurt-Offenbacher Trambahn-Gesellschaft , which were intended for museum preservation before the First World War , as well as a horse-drawn tram car of the Frankfurter Trambahn-Gesellschaft survived the Second World War hidden under tarpaulin in the Eckenheim depot until they were removed from the former in 1950 Driving instructor Ernst Lebek were rediscovered out of curiosity. The vehicles are now in the Frankfurt am Main Transport Museum in Schwanheim .

From August 1, 1971, the Bornheim depot was a branch of the Eckenheim depot.

present

Since the opening of the East Depot in 2003, the depot lost its long status as a depot and since then has only served as a car shed. The transition, however, was fluid, as five more trains on the U5 underground tram line were stopped there overnight, and two trains were parked there even during the midday low traffic times. At last some decommissioned Pt wagons were parked there. Of Bombardier Transportation works were carried out on the vehicles before it to the Turkish city of Gaziantep were sold. In autumn 2012 there are numerous U2-type underground cars in and behind the hall and a few more Pt cars, which are offered for sale by VGF. The U2 railcars have not been used on the A route since November 5, 2012. The parked vehicles are therefore no longer needed in Frankfurt. Until February 2012, two accident-damaged PtB cars were also parked in the depot.

Since the Gutleut and Ost depots have reached their capacity limits and numerous tram expansion projects are planned in the north of Frankfurt, a long-term reopening of the depot is not unlikely.

The lost property auction of Verkehrsgesellschaft Frankfurt (VGF) takes place on the first Friday of each month in the Eckenheim depot.

Currently (as of 2006), spare parts are also being outsourced from the central tram workshop to Eckenheim. Part of the tracks was temporarily shut down, as the space in front of the halls is currently being rented out as a parking lot for the car sharing company Stadtmobil .

The Historic Tramway Association of the City of Frankfurt am Main (HSF) has its headquarters in the Eckenheimer Depot and, among other activities, also operates the Transport Museum in Schwanheim .
