Eckhard Günter Ingo Garve (born December 8, 1954 in Celle ; † February 8, 2020 in Hanover ) was a German botanist , ornithologist , conservationist and non-fiction author . As a specialist in vascular plants , he researched the flora in Lower Saxony for decades .

Live and act

Eckhard Garve attended Hermann-Billung-Gymnasium in his hometown from 1965 to 1973 , where he graduated from high school in 1973. From 1976 he studied biology at the Technical University of Braunschweig , then at the Georg-August University in Göttingen with a focus on plant systematics . There he passed his diploma examination on April 30, 1982 with the thesis The Atriplex species (Chenopodiaceae) of the German North Sea coast with Gerhard Wagenitz .

From 1982 to 2005 Garve was an employee of the Lower Saxony State Nature Conservation Administration in Hanover and Hildesheim . As part of his work, he built up the Lower Saxony plant species recording program and directed more than 1,000 mostly volunteer mappers. He evaluated the data collected in this way for the purposes of botanical species protection. In addition, he compiled two flora lists of vascular plants for Lower Saxony and Bremen (1991 and 2004), three versions of the Red List (1983, 1993 and 2004) and two plant distribution atlases. The focus of his work was on the segetal flora , the halophytes of secondary inland salt sites , the neophytes and the implementation of protective measures for highly endangered plant species.

In 2005 he received his doctorate with the work Conservation of the biodiversity of cormophytes in Lower Saxony and Bremen: data bases, setting priorities and species protection measures at the Faculty of Architecture and Landscape of the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz University of Hanover . From 2006 to 2016 he headed the “Regional Nature Conservation” division in the southern branch of the Lower Saxony State Office for Water Management, Coastal and Nature Conservation (NLWKN) in Braunschweig . His work here was particularly focused on improving the cooperation between water management and nature conservation. Eckhard Garve was 2nd chairman of the Floristic-Sociological Working Group and honorary member of the Natural Science Association in Bremen from 1864 .

Eckhard Garve lived in Sarstedt and was married (3 sons). He retired on December 31, 2016.
