Edith Gabry

Edith Kertész-Gabry , actually Edith Gáncz (born July 18, 1927 in Budapest ; † February 10, 2012 in Cologne ) was a Hungarian opera singer ( soprano ) and university teacher. She became known as the first Marie in Bernd Alois Zimmermann's opera The Soldiers .

Life

Edith Gabry, who studied singing at the Budapest Academy of Music , made her debut at the Budapest National Opera in 1951 . After the suppression of the Hungarian uprising in 1956, she moved to the FRG together with her husband, the conductor István Kertész (1929–1973). She then sang at the Bremen Theater before she was committed to the Cologne Opera House in 1960 . There she sang Marie as a dramatic coloratura soprano in the world premiere of Bernd Alois Zimmermann's opera The Soldiers on February 15, 1965 . In 1974 she sang this part again in concert in the "Vocal Symphony" compiled by Zimmermann from the opera.

Edith Gabry has made guest appearances on various national and international stages. At the Salzburg Festival in 1967 she appeared as Silvia in Mozart's opera Ascanio in Alba . Her repertoire included Konstanze in Die Entführung aus dem Serail , Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro , Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte , Pamina in Die Zauberflöte , Zerlina in Don Giovanni , Frau Fluth in Otto Nicolai's opera Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor , die Baroness in Albert Lortzing's opera Der Wildschütz , Marie in the Bartered Bride , Sophie in Rosenkavalier , but also Eva in the Meistersinger von Nürnberg , Desdemona in Verdi's Otello , Alice Ford in Verdi's Falstaff , Antonia in Hoffmann's stories and Zerlina in Fra Diavolo . Her repertoire of operas from the 20th century included Marie in den Soldiers, Cardillac's daughter in Cardillac by Paul Hindemith and Luise in Der Junge Lord by Hans Werner Henze .

Since 1971 Edith Gabry has been a lecturer at the Folkwang Music School in Essen in addition to her singing activities . Before 1977 she was appointed to the Cologne University of Music and Dance . The singer Gerd Grochowski , who was named singer of the year by opera world in 2005 , was one of her students. In 1988 she appeared at the Schwetzingen Festival in the role of Berta in Rossini's opera The Barber of Seville .

She died on February 10, 2012 in a Cologne hospital. She was buried in the family grave at the Melaten cemetery in Cologne (lit. E, between HWG + lit.G).
