Portrait Edmond Duranty

Louis Émile Edmond Duranty (born June 6, 1833 in Paris , † April 9, 1880 ibid) was a French writer and art critic .

For a short time, Duranty published the magazine Le Réalisme in 1856/7 with the help of Jules Champfleury , Jean-Baptiste-Henri Thulié (1832–1916) and Jules Assézat , calling for truthfulness in color and light in relation to contemporary painting. He supported the painters of realism with his writings , and Gustave Courbet was particularly close to him . He also worked for the brothers Edmond and Jules de Goncourt and wrote articles for numerous magazines.

In 1860 Duranty published his first work Le Malheur d'Henriette Gérard at the age of 27 . Two years later the novel La Cause du beau Guillaume appears . More novels followed.

Duranty's friends included Jules Champfleury and Edgar Degas . Henri Fantin-Latour portrayed him in his painting Hommage à Delacroix in 1864 . This group portrait also includes Édouard Manet , whom Duranty introduced to the artist establishment Café Guerbois . In 1870 the lifelong friendship with Manet experienced a short-term crisis after Duranty published a brief and critical exhibition review in the Paris Journal . Manet then slapped Duranty in the Guerbois and met on February 23, 1870 in the forest of Saint-Germain for a degenduell. After Duranty was lightly wounded in the chest, they both agreed that their honor was now restored. All those involved, including Manet's second Émile Zola , then contributed to the legend of this act in the artists' quarters of Batignolles and Montmartre .

In his writings he paid tribute to Manet and Courbet, especially Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot and Eugène Boudin . In the 1870s, Duranty became increasingly the defender of impressionism . In articles in the Gazette des Beaux-Arts , he underlined the relationship between this painting and John Constable and Venetian artists. In his book La Nouvelle peinture: à propos du groupe d'artistes pui expose dans les galeries Durand-Ruel , published in 1876, he settled with the École des Beaux-Arts and proved to be an advocate of Claude Monet , Pierre-Auguste Renoir , and Camille Pissarro , Alfred Sisley and Berthe Morisot . He also wrote a book about the German painter Adolph Menzel .
