Edouard Battegay (born December 1, 1956 in Basel ) is a Swiss internist . He is director of the clinic and polyclinic for internal medicine at the University Hospital Zurich and full professor for internal medicine at the University of Zurich .

Life

Edouard Battegay was born the son of the psychiatrist and psychoanalyst Raymond Battegay . He obtained in 1976 the maturity on Humanities College Basel . In the same year he began studying medicine at the University of Basel , where he obtained his dissertation in 1983 . During his studies, he spent his elective year at the Montreal General Hospital ( surgery ), the Center hospitalier universitaire vaudois in Lausanne ( radiology ) and at the Liestal Cantonal Hospital ( gynecology / obstetrics ). He spent his time as an assistant doctor from 1984 to 1987 in the internal medicine department of the Basel Cantonal Hospital . From 1987 to 1988 he worked there as a deputy senior physician in internal medicine in the internal medicine unit , intensive care unit and emergency unit . After obtaining his specialist title as an internist, Battegay went from 1988 to 1991 to the Pacific Medical Center of the University of Washington ( Seattle / USA). As a Senior Research Fellow, he mainly dealt with atherosclerosis research (Department of Pathology, Laboratory of Russell Ross ) and worked in a consultation hour for lipid metabolism disorders as a Senior Fellow (Department of Internal Medicine, Lipid Clinic, John D. Brunzell , Alain Chait ).

In 1991 Battegay returned to the University Hospital Basel, where he was scientific and clinical senior physician in the department of internal medicine. From 1996 he worked as a senior physician in general outpatient internal medicine (Medical University Polyclinic ) and in 1997 took over the management of the hypertension consultation hour there and head of the research group in the laboratory for vascular biology at the Research Department, University Hospital Basel. In 1998 Battegay completed his habilitation on “The role of platelet-derived growth factor in Vascular Cells and Angiogenesis” and became a private lecturer in internal medicine at the University of Basel. From 2000 to 2003 Battegay was the head physician for internal medicine and a member of the drug commission at the University Hospital Basel. In 2002 he was appointed deputy chief physician and managing director of the Medical Polyclinic. In 2003 Edouard Battegay was appointed professor of internal medicine. In 2005 he became full professor and chief physician of the medical polyclinic at the University Hospital Basel and professor for outpatient internal medicine.

On November 1, 2007, Edouard Battegay changed to his current position as Director of the Clinic and Polyclinic for Internal Medicine at the University Hospital Zurich. At the same time he was appointed full professor for internal medicine at the University of Zurich.

Edouard Battegay's clinical and scientific interests focus on: general internal medicine, multimorbidity (especially disease-disease-medication interactions and therapeutic conflicts), differential diagnostics , hypertension , prevention of cardiovascular diseases and angiogenesis .

In addition to his work as director of the clinic and polyclinic for internal medicine and responsible for further training in internal medicine, he is the founder and President of the Management Committee of the Multimorbidity Competence Center, Vice Director of the university research focus "Dynamics of Healthy Aging" and a member of the academic management of the center for gerontology , as well as lecturer in internal and external training. Battegay is also a member of various committees that deal with cardiovascular prevention. In 2012 he was made a Fellow of the American College of Physicians . He is the founder and president of the Zurich Academy of Internal Medicine (ZAIM) and has been on the Board of Directors of RehaClinic AG since 2015. He has been a Fellow of the Swiss School of Public Health (SSPH +) since 2016. Battegay is also a delegate of the Swiss Society for General Internal Medicine ( SGAIM ) on the committee and board of the German Society for Internal Medicine ( DGIM ), of which he has been an honorary member since 2017.

Battegay is the managing editor of the journal Praxis and author and co-author of various specialist books, such as the international reference work Hypertension: Principles and Practice and editor of the standard work Differential Diagnosis of Inner Diseases . He succeeds Walter Siegenthaler as editor of the 20th edition.

Battegay speaks German, English, French, Swedish, Hebrew and Italian. He lives in Basel, is married and has three grown children.
