Eduard Gurk

Eduard Gurk (born November 17, 1801 in Vienna , † March 31, 1841 in Jerusalem ) was an Austrian painter of the Biedermeier era.

Life

He first learned painting from his father and later studied at the Vienna Academy . He was promoted by Prince Metternich and finally appointed court chamber painter. As such, he accompanied the nobles of the Austrian hereditary monarchy , especially Archduke Ferdinand and Archduke Johann , and immortalized them in his works.

Eduard Gurk became famous as a landscape painter , lithographer , tempera painter (with works in Schenna Castle / South Tyrol) and engraver . It is above all series of images that shape Gurk's oeuvre. From 1830 he was in the service of Crown Prince Ferdinand (later Emperor Ferdinand I of Austria ), whom he accompanied on trips.

He died at the age of 39 while on a study tour in Jerusalem. His will provided for a poor sick foundation in the kk St. Rochus-Spitale in Vienna XIII ( Penzing ).

Gurkgasse in Penzing (since 1859) and Eduard-Gurk-Park , also in Vienna's 14th district (since October 2004) , are named after him .
