Karl Ernst Eduard Tempeltey (born October 13, 1832 in Berlin , † May 28, 1919 in Coburg ) (pseudonym Karl Ernst) was a German theater director , writer and politician .

Live and act

After studying history and philology in Berlin , he was initially editor of the feature pages of the Berliner Nationalzeitung in 1860 and 1861 and, as the successor to Titus Ullrich, he became secretary of the German Progressive Party (DFP). He had written several dramas and was best known for his play Klytämnestra , which Heinrich Laube performed at the Burgtheater in Vienna .

In 1862 he followed the call of Duke Ernst II of Saxe-Coburg and was initially a cabinet advisor. In 1863 he accompanied the Duke at the Frankfurt Prince Congress and stayed in Kiel in 1864 and 1865 as a diplomat on behalf of the Duke . After returning to Coburg, he became head of the cabinet in 1871 and from 1887 until his retirement on October 1, 1896, cabinet president in Gotha .

During his entire political career he had never ceased to be active as a writer. His first great success was the tragedyKlytämnestra ” in Berlin in 1857 . He also wrote plays, dramas, operas and lyrics. In addition, from 1868 to 1874 he was the director of the court orchestra and theater director at the Ducal Saxon Court Theater in Coburg , which is now the Coburg State Theater .

Due to the friendly relations not only with Duke Ernst II, but also with the doctor and fellow writer Gustav Freytag , he collected over 40 years of correspondence between Duke Ernst II, Gustav Freytag and their wives and left them in a special edition in 1911 publish.

Eduard Tempeltey was married to Emma von Görschen, nee Riedel (1845-1924), the widow of Otto von Görschen and daughter of the archivist , historian and politician Adolph Friedrich Johann Riedel .
