Adolph Friedrich Johann Riedel (born December 5, 1809 in Biendorf bei Neubukow , † September 8, 1872 in Berlin ) was a German archivist , historian and politician .

He was the son of pastor Johann Christian Conrad Riedel and his wife Amalia Maria Caroline nee. Joergens. Adolph Friedrich Riedel married Pauline Hoefer (1816–1889), a cousin of the brothers Albert Hoefer and Edmund Hoefer , in 1834 . His daughter Emma Clara Helene, a gifted pianist and student of Franz Liszt , married the highly decorated Prussian officer Otto von Görschen .

Education and professional career

After home schooling, Riedel attended the Fridericianum grammar school in Schwerin . He then studied Protestant theology and philology in Berlin and received his doctorate in 1831. phil. Just one year later he received his habilitation and worked as a private lecturer at Berlin University . In 1833 he received from Friedrich Wilhelm III. the indigenous and with it the possibility of being accepted into the Prussian civil service. From 1833 Riedel worked as an archivist in what later became known as the secret ministerial archive , which was only merged with the secret state archive in 1874 . Just one year after starting his work, he was head of the ministerial archive. In 1836 he was appointed Privy Councilor and in 1842 the Secret Archives Councilor. At the same time he was appointed associate professor for political science at the University of Berlin. From 1862 to 1865 he was the owner of the Britz manor . From 1868 he lived on his estates in Hohenschönhausen and Bürknersfelde . He conducted agricultural studies in his gardens, especially fruit tree cultivation.

Scientific activity and publications

In 1837 Riedel was one of the founders of the Association for the History of the Mark Brandenburg . He became the general secretary of the association and was responsible for Märkische research until 1862 . In 1851 he became a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences . From 1868 he was the official historiographer of Brandenburg history.

Riedel published numerous historical writings, especially on the history of Brandenburg , but also works on economics. These include u. a .: The Mark Brandenburg in 1250 (1831–1832), political economy or economics (1837–1840), history of the Prussian royal house (2nd part 1861, partly only published posthumously). He was editor of the Codex diplomaticus Brandenburgensis (1838–1869).

Activity in the railway sector and industry

In addition to his scientific work, Riedel was also active in business. From 1843 to 1849 he was a board member of the Lower Silesian-Märkische Railway . There he became a part-time deputy director in 1843 and director in 1844. In addition, from 1845 he was a member of the administrative board of the Berlin-Anhalter Railway , and between 1850 and 1870 a member of the board of directors of the Association for the Beet Sugar Industry.

Political mandates

In 1848 he was a member of the Prussian National Assembly for the Niederbarnim constituency and in 1850 a member of the Erfurt Union Parliament . Between 1849 and 1855 and from 1859 to 1861 he sat for various constituencies in the Prussian House of Representatives . He initially belonged to the right-wing faction ( Count von Arnim-Boitzenburg , Ernst von Bodelschwingh ) and later to the left-wing faction ( Karl Friedrich von Vincke ).
