Edward L. Mark
Edward Laurens Mark (born May 30, 1847 in Chautauqua County , New York , † December 16, 1946 in Cambridge , Massachusetts ) was an American zoologist and anatomist at Harvard University .
Mark graduated from the University of Michigan a bachelor and worked for the Northern Boundary Survey (a commission to the border to today's Canada set), but even then studied in Leipzig and Jena and acquired in 1976 at the University of Leipzig a Dr. phil. in zoology . In 1877 he received a professorship in zoology at Harvard University, in 1885 one for anatomy . From 1900 to 1921 he was director of Harvard Zoological Laboratories , from 1903 to 1931 he was director of the Bermuda Laboratory for Research .
Edward Mark was able to make significant contributions to the understanding of the morphology of the early life stages of arthropods . Using Limax campestris ( water snail ), he described the structure of the embryo with reference to development , fertility , cell proliferation and cell differentiation . He is considered the founder of the author-year citation method (Harvard citation). He translated several German textbooks into English. In 1896 he was envoy to the 4th International Zoology Congress in Cambridge , England .
Mark was married to Lucy Thorp King (1848–1923) since 1873; the couple had two children.
