Effigy of the Forgotten ( English for portrait of the forgotten ) was the first full-length album by the American death metal band Suffocation .

History of origin

The album was producer Scott Burns in the Morrisound Recording studios in Tampa ( Florida added). Some of the songs were already released on the previous mini-album Human Waste , but the production of the album was no longer as raw as that of the previous album. The songs Rein Cremation and Mass obliteration was George "Corpse Grinder" Fisher of Monstrosity (today Cannibal Corpse and Paths of Possession ) as a guest singer active. After the album, Josh Bahron got out and joined Autopsy .

The album was released on October 18, 1991. It was released in the United States through R / C Records, a sub-label of Roadrunner Records .

The album was dedicated to Roger Patterson . Atheist's former bass player died on February 12, 1991, six months before the album was released, as a result of a traffic accident.

The album was re-released in 2003 along with Pierced from Within .

Cover

For the cover artwork is Dan Seagrave responsible. The gouache painting shows a machine that was created as a hybrid of organic and metallic material. This feeds on living organisms and collects their genetic information.

Music style and reception

The album contains fast-paced Death Metal mixed with Grindcore influences. When it came out, many couldn't do anything with this type of music. In particular, the raw, dull production and the growling of singer Frank Mullen made access to this hitherto unknown form of Death Metal difficult. Frank Albrecht from the rock-hard magazine described the band's music as a “lawnmower sound” and “Hacke pur” and called the band a “scrap band”. He only awarded 3 out of 10 points. Today the album is considered a pioneering album and a classic of technically played Death Metal.
