history

Egem, which is dependent on Bambrugge, extends on the border of the village of Vlekkem. Over the centuries Egem had the following names: The oldest documents mentioned Heddeghem (1571), later Edeghem (1629), Hettegem (1638), Eedegem (1763), Eghem (1779) and in 1842 Eegem is mentioned. Like all Flemish place names with "-gem", that of Egem also goes back etymologically to a Germanic composition with "-heem", German: "-haim", living space, and a derivation of "-inga". According to J. Mansion, the first part is reconstructed from the Germanic name Haid, Hait of Heit. Combined, the result is Haidingenheem (which corresponds to Haidingahaim or Haidingenheim in German), i.e. the residence of the tribal members or followers of the Franconian Haid, and then Heddeghem as a modification. The place name Egem belongs to the group of ingahem names that are older than regular hemenames. Egem was founded at the beginning of the Merovingian period in the sixth to seventh centuries and has an older origin than Bambrugge. Egem was probably a remote homestead that wasn't very big. It was later absorbed by the faster developing Bambrugge.

Attractions

  • The Egemmolen or Meuleken Tik Tak (German: Egemmühle) is an overshot water mill and is located in Everdal 21. It was a grain mill . The water wheel has been removed. Most of the mill was destroyed, but there are still remains from this mill and the miller's house is still intact. The mill is not a Rijksmonument , so it is not a listed building.
  • The chapel at Katstraat
