Career

Schöpf began skiing at an early age and celebrated some successes in the youth field in the early 1940s. His career was temporarily interrupted by the Second World War. At the end of 1946 he returned to his homeland after two years as a prisoner of war and began studying at the University of Innsbruck . He celebrated his first major successes at the 1947 Academic World Championships in Davos , where he won the downhill, slalom and combined titles. In the same winter he was also Austrian slalom champion .

In the 1947/48 season Schöpf won the downhill runs in Villars, Monte Canin and Marmolada as well as the Seefeld slalom . In Bad Hofgastein he was Austrian champion in slalom and combination. At the Olympic Winter Games in St. Moritz in 1948 , however, he was without a medal: He came fifth in the downhill and sixth in the slalom. He couldn't finish the combination. In the winter of 1948/49 Schöpf celebrated his greatest successes at the Hahnenkamm races in Kitzbühel , where he won all competitions, and at the Austrian championships, where he won all three titles in downhill, slalom and combined. At the 1950 World Cup in Aspen , the Tyrolean won the bronze medal in the downhill, behind the Italian Zeno Colò and the French James Couttet . He finished fifth in slalom, but only twentieth in giant slalom. A little later he won the slalom and the combination at the Canadian Championships in Banff .

After the World Cup season, Schöpf ended his career for the time being and opened a sporting goods store in Seefeld. In 1952 he made a comeback and finished fourth in the downhill from Bad Gastein . So he could also start at the Olympic Games in Oslo , where he was unsuccessful. He fell out of the giant slalom and had a hard fall on the downhill. Then he finally ended his skiing career.

In addition to his career as a ski racer, Schöpf was also active as a handball player from the late 1940s and made several appearances in the Austrian national team . In the mid-1950s, he was also a rally driver. In 1960 he became the race supervisor for the ski company Kneissl and worked with successful skiers such as Karl Schranz , Heinrich Messner , Leonhard Stock and Marc Girardelli . After his marriage, he rebuilt the Hotel Edelweiß in St. Anton am Arlberg .
