The Eichsfelder Pforte is a west-east running, around two kilometers wide valley in the southwest of the Nordhausen district in northern Thuringia .

location

It is bordered by the Bleicheröder mountains in the north and the interface between Dün and Hainleite in the south and along the Wipper represents the gate of the Eichsfelder Kessel with Sollstedt in the west to the north Thuringian hill country with Obergebra in the east. The name was created by moving from Nordhausen to the west Merchants who had to pass the valley on their way to Eichsfeld . Bleicherode in the northeast is the closest major city.

nature

The valley can be seen from a distance from a north-easterly or south-westerly direction and is striking due to its symmetrical shape. The actually visible boundary is formed by the Gebraer Kopf (447 m) in the Bleicheröder mountains and the ridge of the northeastern Dün between the peaks of Kriegsberg (485 m) and Katzenburg (477 m) on the Katzenstein , a wooded area about 200 meters above the Wippertal Rock face south of Sollstedt.

traffic

The narrow valley had been a trade route between east and west for centuries. Today the Halle – Hann railway line runs here . Münden , the federal highway 38 (the so-called Südharzautobahn with the Höllberg tunnel to the west ) and the state road 3080 (until December 31, 2010 federal road 80 ).

Others

The Eichsfelder Pforte was the namesake of the former administrative association Eichsfelder Pforte , which is congruent with the present-day community of Sollstedt.
