The Federal Department of Defense, Civil Protection and Sport DDPS ( French Département fédéral de la défense, de la protection de la population et des sports DDPS , Italian Dipartimento federale della difesa, della protezione della popolazione e dello sport DDPS , Romansh ) is one of the seven departments of the Swiss state government. The department is headed by one of the Federal Councilors .
The central concern of the DDPS is to create “security and movement” for Switzerland and its people. Army , civil protection and civilian institutions work closely together under the principle of "security through cooperation". They protect and help at home and abroad. Peacebuilding is an important contribution to international security and thus also to the security of Switzerland. With the Federal Office of Sport , the department promotes sport and physical activity on a national level and thus contributes to the health of the population.
History and meaning
At the beginning of the state, the department was called the Military Department . In 1979 it was renamed the Federal Military Department (EMD) . With the integration of civil protection and the promotion of sport into the department, it has been called the Federal Department of Defense, Civil Protection and Sport since 1998 . The DDPS is considered an unpopular department among federal councilors and is mostly assigned to newcomers.
