The 1997/98 season of the Austrian national ice hockey league was played with six teams. The defending champion was EHC Lustenau , who was eliminated in the semifinals. The DEK Klagenfurt became the new champion .

Participant and mode

After a total of fourteen teams had participated in the second division last year, the field of participants shrank to only six teams in the previous season. Especially the Tyrolean teams turned their backs on the league to compete in the Tyrolean regional league. But also some other teams finally withdrew, as the east-west division of the league was no longer possible, long journeys were expected, and instead took part in the respective national leagues.

With the remaining six teams, a double round trip was finally played in the basic round, with the points obtained being halved after the first round. The best four teams qualified for the playoffs, which determined the champions in the form of best-of-five series in the semi-finals (February 18 to March 4, 1998) and finals (March 7 to 21, 1998).
