Ekkehard Wölk

Ekkehard Wölk (born June 14, 1967 in Schleswig ) is a German jazz pianist and composer .

Life

After graduating from high school , which he passed in 1987, Wölk first studied historical and systematic musicology at the University of Hamburg and later at the Humboldt University in Berlin . From 1988 to 1994 he also trained as a classical pianist at the Hamburg Conservatory and the Lübeck University of Music , which he completed with a diploma as a concert pianist and music teacher. His teachers included Kevin McKenna ( Dublin ), Hartmut Leistritz (Lübeck), Eliza Hansen (Hamburg) and Günther Däubler (Würzburg Conservatory). His jazz improvisation teachers were Walter Norris , Dieter Glawischnig , Richie Beirach , Philip Catherine , John Taylor , Fred Hersch and Barry Harris .

In 1995 Wölk moved to Berlin , where he works as a composer and band leader, mainly in the jazz sector.

Compositions

In addition to his work as a jazz pianist, Wölk has presented several compositions that deal with the influences of European modernism. They were produced for Deutschlandfunk Kultur , Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg and Bayerischer Rundfunk , but were also performed live. The following are to be mentioned:

  • Across the Border , a suite in six movements, was written in summer 2000 for a jazz trio (piano, bass, drums). The piece is an attempt to capture the atmosphere and emotions while traveling, alternating firmly notated parts and jazz improvisations.
  • Pictures and Sounds (1999–2006) contains pieces that are inspired by motifs from literature and the visual arts. The titles are: The Juggler (1999), Bartleby's Blues (2001), Dulcinea (2001) and Master Gepetto's Nightmare (2002).
