occupation

El Cantante is a US biopic from the year 2006 . Directed by Leon Ichaso , who wrote the script together with David Darmstaeder and Todd Bello .

action

The plot begins in 1985, which is declared by a faded-in text as the last good year of the musician Héctor Lavoe . A flashback shows Lavoe in 1963. He lives in Puerto Rico , performs as a musician and wants to travel to the United States, which he hopes will boost his career. He comes to New York City and meets Puchi at a club in Bronx . Lavoe and Puchi start a relationship and get married a little later.

The founder of Fania Records , Jerry Masucci, becomes aware of Lavoe. The musician develops his own salsa style. He earns well and moves into a large apartment on Central Park . He later dies due to drug abuse.

Reviews

Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times on August 3, 2007 that the film could appeal to fans of Héctor Lavoe, Marc Anthony, Jennifer Lopez or Latin music. He would disappoint the other viewers.

Wally Hammond wrote in TimeOut London magazine that the “chaotic” and “sentimental” film vacillated between a biopic suitable for cable television and a socially critical film about drug problems. The musical performances would compensate for these weaknesses somewhat, but the numerous jumps and flashbacks would be reminiscent of MTV and make any insight or empathy impossible for the viewer. It is a shame.

Robert Koehler wrote in the magazine Variety on September 21, 2006 that the film was a “virtual template for all imaginable clichés of musicians' film biographies” ( “virtual template of every imaginable cliche of the musical biopic” ). He suffered from a lack of narrative and character focus, which was due to the need of the co-producer Jennifer Lopez for another lead role. The film does not show how artists mature and venture into new territory. Lopez offered neither sharpness nor strength in her portrayal; Anthony seems passive.

backgrounds

The film was shot in Puerto Rico and New York City . The world premiere took place on September 12, 2006 at the Toronto International Film Festival , which was followed by several other film festivals. The movie grossed approximately $ 7.6 million in US cinemas .
