Elisabeth Plank (born June 1, 1960 in Wels ) is an Austrian painter . In public spaces, she realizes glass windows and room concepts.

life and work

From 1979 to 1984 Elisabeth Plank studied at the University of Applied Arts Vienna with Oswald Oberhuber . Friendships with Robert Lettner , Franz Graf and Josef Ramaseder date from this time , all of which led to joint exhibitions. From 1983 she painted large-format abstract pictures ( large picture with purple ) and from 1986 allegories, which thematized first reflections on the figure as a visual vocabulary.

In 1986 she began her ongoing exhibition activities with Junge Szene Wien " in the Vienna Secession. The air brush was included in her paintings from 1988. She subsequently created the picture series Guitarists and Flower Pictures. In 1990 she received the Upper Austrian Promotion Prize for Fine Arts and left in 1991 with a grant from the Federal Ministry for Education and the Arts to New York for six months (exhibition at the Austrian Cultural Institute ).

In 1992 she received a scholarship from the Federal Ministry of Education and the Arts to Japan, where she studied at Tokyo University of the Arts and exhibited at the Miyagi Museum of Art in Sendai. Abstract ink works ( symmetry and symmetry ) and color codes were created in Japan . In 1993 she painted the series of abstract time containers in Vienna , which represent a condensation and deformalization of Japanese ink works. From 1994 she worked in the Staatsatelier Davidgasse, Vienna (friendship with Franz Graf and Walter Vopava ). There began a long-term occupation with reduced, fluidic painting processes.

In 1996 the artist's book (Antarctica) Brahma was published together with Franz Graf . The accompanying exhibition took place in the Galerie next St. Stephan in Vienna. In 1996 she designed her first work in public space, the colored glass windows of the Glimpfingerstraße chapel in Linz. In 2005 another colored glass window and an intercultural meditation room were created in the hospital of the Elisabethinen Linz . In the Marienstraße Linz studio (from 2005) the previous reduction in painting was replaced by strongly colored, gestural images. From 2007 the air brush was used again.

In 2008 she was accepted into the artists' association MAERZ . The large-format flow pictures were created from 2009. In 2010 a monumental glass wall (42 m²) was completed in the Sonnenhof chapel, Linz. From 2011 on, figures (plants, horses, dancers) appear again as visual vocabulary in her paintings. In addition, glass windows were designed for the Steyregg community center.

In 2012 Elisabeth Plank designed a tabernacle for the Sonnenhof chapel in Linz and realized the large-format painting Score for the Linz Music Theater . In 2013 the new confessional room and the redesign of the vestibule of the Ignatius Church Alter Dom, Linz, were presented to the public. In 2013, there was a reduction in the gestural in favor of formal elements. Horizontal, vertical, diagonals were balanced in colored settlements in the painting surface ( e.g .: colored coordinates ), from 2014 in the painting space (e.g .: sketch # 1 ). Texts on this appeared in Standard ( Wiltrud Hackl ) and by Gustav Schörghofer ( World of Women ), who described the essence of these images as “floating as a pure state”. In 2015, the publication Großes Bild mit Lila was published , showing paintings from 31 years in chronological order.

Elisabeth Plank's painting is about a visual artistic process that addresses the vocabulary of painting itself. Elements of painting such as color, shape, structure and space are not used in an illustrative or illusionistic way, but rather directly to construct the pictures.
