Elke Zauner (born April 7, 1972 in Altötting ) is a German painter .

life and work

Elke Zauner trained as a church painter from 1991 to 1994 in Ampfing in Upper Bavaria . From 1995 to 2002 she studied figurative painting , drawing and sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and was a master class student with Hans Baschang . In 2002 she graduated with a diploma. Since 1997 she has been working as a freelance artist.

Scholarships led her to longer work stays in 2001 to Iceland (Reykjavík), 2003 to Vienna and 2006 to Bamberg . She also had several exhibitions there. In 2008 she was awarded the Rome Prize, which is linked to a one-year scholarship at the German Academy Rome Villa Massimo in Rome . The scholarship was concluded with an exhibition in the Martin-Gropius-Bau in Berlin .

In the beginning, the subjects of Zauner's artistic work mostly revolved around her Bavarian homeland, among other things she created several series of animal motifs. This resulted in both large-format and more abstract pictures on canvas as well as small collages on paper. In addition, she also deals with room installations and working with assembly foam. Within the individual works, she uses a variety of creative means, color overlays alternate with thin glazes or closed color areas.

In her work, Zauner deals in particular with “spatial conditions and light, with form and color”. In doing so, she uses color and color gradations in order to “suggest spatiality and then break it up again and leave the viewer in a kind of visual confusion”. Upon closer inspection, elements emerge that z. B. consist of strong color contrasts (mostly complementary colors) that “disguise where a room leads. The viewer thus has the opportunity to gradually open up the image space for himself and to discover new dimensions and thus to free himself from the state of confusion. "

Influenced by her stay in the Villa Massimo, she changed her artistic style, "now light and architecture" are the focus of her pictures. The animal motifs, which previously dominated her work in several series, have now completely disappeared; also earlier pop art reminiscences.

Zauner lives and works in Bamberg and Rome.
