Ellenburg is a town in Clinton County , New York, United States . At the time of the United States Census , the Town of Ellenburg had 1,743 inhabitants. It is named after the daughter of the main owner at the time. Ellenburg is on the county’s western border and is northwest of Plattsburgh . The southern part of the town is in Adirondack Park .

According to the United States Census Bureau , the town has an area of 278.3 km 2 , of which 276.0 km 2 is land and 2.3 km 2 (= 0.83%) is water. The western border of the town in this area forms the boundary between Clinton County and Franklin County .
US Highway 11 runs through the northeastern part of Ellenburg while New York State Route 190 (Military Turnpike) crosses the town in an east-west direction and crosses US-11 in the village of Ellenburg. The New York State Route 374 runs the Town through the south-west corner. Within the Town of Ellenburg are:
- Dannemora Crossing - crossing on the eastern city limits, east of the hamlet of Ellenburg
- Ellenburg - eponymous hamlet of the town, lies in the north on US-11
- Ellenburg Center - hamlet in the northern part of the town, southwest of the hamlet of Ellenburg
- Ellenburg Depot - hamlet east of Ellenburg on US-11, named after the former train depot
- Ellenburg Mountain - Mountain in the southwest corner of the town
- Gibson Corners - junction on the northern city limits in the northeast corner of Ellenburg
- Hammonds Corners - Junction of NY-190 on the east city limits
- Harrigan - hamlet in the northwest corner of the town in Adirondack Park
- Lake Roxanne - artificial lake east of the hamlet of Ellenburg
- Merrill - Hamlet on NY 374 in the southwest corner of the town on Upper Chateaugay Lake
- Point Bluff - peninsula in Upper Chateaugay Lake
- Upper Chateaugay Lake - Lake in the southwest corner of the town
history
White colonization of the area began around 1800 but was delayed due to the British-American War . Ellenburg was named after Ellen Murray, the daughter of the early landowner.
The town was formed in 1830 from part of the town of Mooers .

At the time of the United States Census 2000, Ellenburg was inhabited by 1,812 people. The population density was 6.6 people per km 2 . There were 941 housing units, an average of 3.4 per km 2 . The population in Ellenburg consisted of 98.79% of White , 0.06% Black or African American , 0.11% Native American , 0.22% Asian , 0% Pacific Islander , 0.22% said other races to belong and 0.61% named two or more races. 0.83% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latinos of any race.
The residents of Ellenburg distributed to 703 households, of which 30.4% were living in children under 18 years. 58.6% of households were married, 7.1% had a female head of the household without a husband, and 31.0% were not families. 25.6% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 12.5% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.10.
The population was divided into 24.% minors, 7.9% 18–24 year olds, 27.2% 25–44 year olds, 25.1% 45–64 year olds and 15.1% aged 65 or over more. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 women there were 99.8 men. For every 100 women over the age of 18, there were 95.1 men.
