Geographical location

Dannemora is west of Lake Champlain and on the western border of Clinton County in northeast New York State. In his area are the northern part of the Adirondack Mountains , which are also the highest mountain range in New York State. The area of ​​the city was first settled around 1838. In 1845 a prison was set up with inmates working in the local mine. The Clinton Correctional Facility is now one of the maximum security prisons in New York State. In 1854, Dannemora, previously part of the town of Beekmantown , became independent.

Economy and Infrastructure

The city's most important employer is the "Clinton Correctional Facility", a maximum security prison that can accommodate around 3,000 prisoners. One known inmate was Lucky Luciano . The prison occupies a significant area in the north of the main settlement. Because of the high, long prison wall on one of the main streets of the town and its location in the northern part of the USA, it is nicknamed "Little Siberia" ("Little Siberia"). Around a third of male employees and 17% of women work in the public sector or as social workers. Another prison, the Lyon Mountain Correctional Facility, was closed in 2011.
