Ellingen used to belong to the Principality of Wied and was near the border with the County of Sayn . The Principality of Wied finally merged with the surrounding territories in the Duchy of Nassau in 1806 . Ellingen was part of the Ehrenbreitstein administrative district there . Through the agreements reached at the Congress of Vienna in 1815 , the region around Ellingen was ceded to the Kingdom of Prussia , where Ellingen became the mayor's office in Anhausen in the Neuwied district in the Koblenz administrative district , which became part of the Rhine province in 1822 .

In 1845, Ellingen was united with the neighboring community of Niederhonnefeld with the introduction of the “Prussian Land Community Code for the Rhine Province” to form the community of Niederhonnefeld-Ellingen. In 1929, at the instigation of the then Neuwied District Administrator, it was decided to build a primary school in Ellingen, and school operations began in 1931. After the Second World War, Ellingen belonged to the Rhineland-Palatinate Office of Rengsdorf. The community Niederhonnefeld-Ellingen was dissolved after an official resolution of July 7, 1966 with effect from August 1, 1966, Niederhonnefeld and Ellingen became independent districts of the newly founded local community of Straßenhaus. In 1968 the municipality of Rengsdorf emerged from the Rengsdorf office , and since its dissolution on January 1, 2018, Ellingen has belonged to the Rengsdorf-Waldbreitbach municipality .
