Emanuel Pendl (born February 23, 1845 in Merano ; † September 28, 1927 in Vienna ) was an Austrian painter and sculptor with South Tyrolean roots (son of the sculptor Franz Xaver Pendl and grandson of Johann Baptist Pendl (1791-1859)). He is Erwin Pendl's father .

Live and act

Until 1866, Emanuel Pendl studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice with Luigi Ferrari . Then he went to Vienna and studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts .

Emanuel Pendl created numerous monumental sculptures for Vienna Ringstrasse buildings or provided them with artistic decorations, such as those on the Palace of Justice , the Burgtheater , the Parliament , the University of Vienna and the Vienna City Hall . Other important objects by Pendl are the sculptures on the main building of the Karl-Franzens University as well as on the facade of the town hall in Graz and the Andreas Hofer monument in Merano .

Pendl reportedly attempted suicide by inhaling gas on August 15, 1919, along with his wife, who was seriously ill with nerves . - Reports about the incident that cost Franziska Pendl her life were, however, corrected by Pendl's two sons to the press that their father had no intention of suicide and that their mother's inhalation of luminous gas was due to an attack of sensory confusion .

Pendl, who lived at Wehlistraße 226, near the Vienna Prater , was knocked down on September 9, 1927 on the edge of the Praterstern by an A K tram . The injuries from the accident resulted in death within three weeks.

Emanuel Pendl was buried in an honorary grave of the City of Vienna ( Wiener Zentralfriedhof , Group 33 F, Row 1, No. 26).
