Emanuel Stöckler (born December 24, 1819 in Nikolsburg , Moravia ; † November 5, 1893 in Zwölfmalgrei , today Bozen ) was an Austrian painter .

Life

Emanuel Stöckler, who comes from Nikolsburg in South Moravia, studied landscape painting with Thomas Ender and Joseph Mössmer at the Vienna Academy . He has exhibited here almost annually since 1838. In the mid-1840s he went on an extensive study trip that took him via Switzerland and Italy to the Orient , as far as Constantinople . On the way home he stayed for a long time in Bucharest , where he painted for the prince of Wallachia . Stöckler later became a Russian court painter . In 1878 he donated a valuable collection of seals to the Institute for Austrian Historical Research, among other things, which he had bought from the estate of his cousin Eduard Melly. For this he received the Knight's Cross of the Franz Joseph Order in 1879 .

power

Emanuel Stöckler was primarily a landscape painter who created views from Moravia, Austria , Switzerland, Italy, but also from Montenegro and Constantinople. Since trips to the Orient were still very unusual during the pre-March period , his oriental views and genre scenes form a specialty within Austrian painting of that time. Stöckler was also an excellent watercolor artist , who enjoyed great success with the public with his pictures during his lifetime. Today it is largely forgotten.
