Emerald Isle is an island in the Queen Elizabeth Islands . It is located in the Northwest Territories of Canada .
The island is north of Melville Island , south of Mackenzie King Island and east of Prince Patrick Island .
It is 549 km² in size, 35 km long and about 17 km wide and up to 150 m high.
The island was discovered in 1853 by Francis Leopold McClintock , who gave it its name because of its proximity to Prince Patrick Island, which is also used for Ireland , the "green island".
