The island is 5,081.1 km² and was discovered in June 1915 by the polar explorer Vilhjálmur Stefánsson , who initially believed it to be part of the neighboring Borden Island , from which it is, however, separated by the Wilkins Strait . The error was discovered by the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1947 while flying over, and two years later the island was named after the Canadian Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King .
