Eglinton Island is an island in the Queen Elizabeth Islands . It is located in the Northwest Territories of Canada .
The island is about 73 km long, 9 to 27 km wide, 1541 km² in size and up to 210 m high. Eglinton Island is separated from Melville Island to the east by Kellett Strait, from Prince Patrick Island to the west by the Crozier Channel, and from Banks Island to the south by McClure Strait .
The island was discovered in 1853 by George Frederick Mecham (1828-1858), who was part of Henry Kellett's British expedition in search of the missing John Franklin . In the same year Francis Leopold McClintock toured the west coast of the island with the dog sled . It is named after Archibald Montgomerie, 13th Earl of Eglinton, (1812–1861).
