Life

Emil Beurmann was the son of a wallpaperer and grew up in Basel. From an early age he painted, wrote and composed. During the painting lessons he took with Hans Sandreuter , he got to know Lisa Ruutz, who later became the poet Lisa Wenger, and preferred to discuss things with her rather than dedicate himself to drawing. In 1881 Beurmann traveled to the artist mecca of Paris , bought a room in the Latin Quarter and quickly made contact with artists such as Albert Anker , Lovis Corinth , Cuno Amiet and Giovanni Giacometti . In 1894 Monsieur Emilie came to Cairo and lived a comfortable life with his two models, Nebiha and Chadiga. When Swiss "Belami" after a year of Egypt homeward went to Switzerland, it is not accompanied only Chadiga and her friend, the belly dancer Amina, but also a whole oriental squad of fire spouts, drummers, magicians and snake charmers who Beurmann as impresario in "Palais des Fées" performed at the second Swiss national exhibition in Geneva in 1896 . In 1905 he was with Albert Burckhart a founding member of the Swiss Association for Homeland Security .

In Basel, Emil Beurmann then published travel reports in newspapers and book form and soon developed into a painter-poet, who at the end of his life turned to hundreds of amusing and critical feuilletons , among others. a. he wrote for the Nebelspalter and could look back on a good dozen funny books and countless paintings.

In 1897 the bohemians moved to Spain, where they had many women acquaintances, while at home more or less culturally happy ladies from better company waited for their beloved in the studio. After his return, “Beuz”, as he called himself in his books, made numerous pictures in Paris, Frankfurt and Munich . At the age of 52, he suddenly fell in love with his model, the 27-year-old Mariely Brunner, a daughter from a well-to-do bourgeoisie. Against the opposition of his mother-in-law, he married his «Beuzli» in August 1914 and together they led a lively artist marriage. Since both were members of the Basel City Theater Commission, they experienced all the major guest performances between 1914 and 1940 and invited famous people such as Richard Strauss , Max Reinhardt , Richard Tauber and Hans Albers to their home. Although “Beuz” and “Beuzli” were very fond of each other, Emil Beurmann occasionally also kept an eye “on the little girls in jerseys” while his wife corresponded intensively with a star lawyer from Basel who adored her long love letters on a typewriter with a purple ribbon.
