Emile the Tex

Emile den Tex (born November 3, 1918 in Amsterdam , † January 3, 2012 in Zoeterwoude , South Holland ) was a Dutch poet , geologist and university professor .

Life

After attending school in 1937, Den Tex began studying geology at the University of Leiden and completed his doctorate with a dissertation on igneous rock in the French Alps . During this time he was also active as a poet and wrote several volumes of poetry such as Slagzij (1942) and Schipbreuk (1945) as well as the short story collection Pithecanthropus Erectus (1946). In addition, he also wrote articles for the literary magazine De Tweede Ronde at this time .

After several years of scientific work in Australia , he returned to the Netherlands in 1959, where he took over a professorship in petrology at the University of Leiden. In 1979 he became professor at the chair for petrology at the University of Utrecht and taught there until his retirement in 1984. In 1981, the geological institute previously attached to the University of Leiden was relocated to the University of Utrecht.

In addition to his teaching activities, he dealt with research on petrology and especially on igneous rocks and undertook together with his students to research mafic minerals in Galicia . Further research trips took him to the Pyrenees . In 1987 the Geological Association in Bonn awarded him honorary membership. In addition, he was a member of the Natural Sciences Department of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences .

Most recently the Tex, whose son the writer Charles den Tex is, published the textbook Een voorspel van de modern vulkaankunde in West-Europa (1998), in which he gave an overview of the early modern volcanology in the Netherlands in the 17th and 18th centuries gives.

For his services he was made Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion , among other things .
