Emilio Scanavino (born February 28, 1922 in Genoa , Italy , † November 28, 1986 in Milan , Italy) was an Italian painter and sculptor . He is one of the most important representatives of abstract art after the Second World War .

Live and act

After completing the “ scuola magistrale ” in Genoa, Emilio Scanavino attended the art school “ Liceo Artistico Nicolò Barabino ” from 1938 as a pupil of Mario Calonghi . Emilio Scanavino had his first exhibition in 1942 in the Salone Romano in Genoa. He moved to Milan and enrolled in the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Milan .

In 1947 Scanavino traveled to Paris and had contacts with the local artist and writer circles. He got to know Édouard Jaguer , Wols and Camille Bryen , among others . His experiences influenced his art. He first painted in a post-cubist style, exhibited in the Galleria l'Isola in Genoa in 1948 and then turned entirely to abstract painting .

In 1950 Scanavino was a participant in the XXV. Venice Biennale . In 1951 he had an exhibition at the Apollinaire Gallery in London . There he met Philip Martin, Eduardo Paolozzi and Francis Bacon , which was to have a lasting impact on his art.

He maintained artistic contacts and friendships with Lucio Fontana , Sergio Dangelo , Enrico Baj , Gianni Dova , Roberto Crippa , Asger Jorn , Karel Appel , Corneille , the CoBrA group and with Roberto Matta and Wifredo Lam .

In 1954 Scanavino exhibited on the XXVII. Venice Biennale , at the XXIX. 1958 Biennale he won a prize and the XXX. and XXXIII. The 1960 and 1966 biennials each dedicated a separate hall to him. In 1959 he was a participant in documenta 2 in Kassel .

In 1958 he moved to Milan with his family. There he met Gianpiero Giani , Gillo Dorfles , Roberto Sanesi , Franco Russoli and Alain Jouffroy .

In 1970 he won the grand prize at the Biennale di Mentone . He was invited to the São Paulo Biennale in 1971 and exhibited there with Alik Cavaliere . This was followed by important solo exhibitions in the Kunsthalle Darmstadt (1973) and in Venice in the Palazzo Grassi and in Milan in the Palazzo Reale .

In 1979 and 1980 he exhibited in the Matthias Fels gallery in Paris and in the Palazzo Massari in Ferrara . In 1984 and 1985 retrospectives followed in Florence in the Palazzo dei Congressi and in the Chateau de Tours .

Emilio Scanavino died in Milan on November 28, 1986 at the age of only 64.
