Finally holidays! is the first solo album by Farin Urlaub , the guitarist and singer of the group Die Ärzte . It was released on October 22, 2001.

Emergence

About three years after the reunion of Die Ärzte , Farin Urlaub decided to publish a solo album . After the release of the live album We want only your soul (1999), when the doctors had a little break, Farin Urlaub decided, not least because his band colleague Bela B grandly announced a solo album by the guitarist, to finally put the plan into action . Urlaub played all instruments (except wind and string instruments ) on Holiday at last! yourself a. The horns on the album are from The Busters and the strings from a good friend named Esther.

Only a few songs and B-sides from the four released singles are from unreleased doctors songs. Most of the album was composed by Farin Urlaub for the album himself. The album title is an allusion and a play on words to Jan Vetter's well-known pseudonym Farin Urlaub, to the well-known, frequently used phrase and the long history of the album. The album was recorded in Farin Urlaub's home studio, which he called "tanning studio" on this album. A running gag on his solo releases is the different naming of the studio.

Originally, the cover was supposed to have a burning hotel in the background and holidays with a gas can in hand in the foreground. Due to September 11, 2001 , in the context of which the album was released, a new, defused version was chosen: Farin's upper body can be seen in the foreground, a burning palm tree in the background.

Music genre

Farin Urlaub's first solo album is still relatively clearly influenced by the last releases of his main band Die Ärzte, and lyrically the album does not differ as much from their releases as the later solo albums. The album opens with an intro that was inspired by the Undertones classic Girls Don't Like It , which began with a short dialogue between two girls. With Sumisu (a Japanese word for "Smith") there is an homage to the British band The Smiths on the album, where Urlaub tries to adapt his singing to Morrissey and his guitar playing to the style of Johnny Marr . In other songs, too, Urlaub uses different styles, so he uses elements of Samba on I don't belong , Wunderbar is based on Ska and with OK he uses musical characteristics of Nu Metal . The love song Every Day Sunday , on the other hand, uses surf music . Farin Urlaub used a surf guitar for the song . With Phenomenal doesn't matter and The beautiful girl there are also two ballads on the album. The Cavalier is based on a dialogue scene in the film O Brother, Where Art Thou? - A Mississippi odyssey . 1000 Years of Bad Sex was not originally intended as a Farin Urlaub or Die-Ärzte song, but was intended to be used for another band. However, when he mixed the song for a B-side, Urlaub liked it so much that he took it on the album. ... and the guitar was still warm is an instrumental piece that is based on Ennio Morricone . Dear State anticipates the future direction of his solo project, which is much more political than Die Ärzte.

reception

It was criticized in many places that the album does not differ much from the output of its main band. Michael Schuh wrote on Laut.de :

“[...] The only thing that remains to be criticized is the largely missing element of surprise. "Finally holidays!" is a party record for doctors fans with a few Farin highlights. But how can you be angry with a guy who rhymes "Cyclops" with "Misanthrope"? "

- Michael Schuh from laut.de

Parallels to his main band are also drawn on Visions.de :

“The music on the phonogram, like the packaging, is pretty much related to the doctors. After (...) it is remarkable what this inconspicuous late thirties can conjure up musically. The instrumental piece "... and the guitar was still warm" shows his talent, which really comes into its own here for the first time. Songs like "OK" or "Lieber Staat" can only be written by a man who has already produced masterpieces like "Upside Down in Hell" or "Hurray". (...) Still, Far - In - Urlaub (that's the meaning of his artist name) did not get a perfect album with "Endlich Urlaub" because not one song really shines through. "OK" comes very close to Farin's masterpiece "The Rebel" from the days of doctors, but it also doesn't have the necessary density. "Endlich Urlaub" is more to be seen as the sum of its parts, a good mood album that one likes to put on again and again, but nothing more. Farin Urlaub is definitely one of the most talented German-speaking (!!!) musicians and the album is a must for every doctor fan anyway. "

- Bernado Gui : Visions.de

In the Ox-Fanzine Tom van Laak wrote:

"Not so with Mr Urlaub, who actually recorded an album with" Endlich Urlaub "that was so refreshing that it stood out from the boring mash of German rock and hip-hop music that the man would have deserved the Federal Music Cross in some expensive material for that alone. (...) So much the better if the rest of it hardly falls off, and if not musically, then at least he can convince with a very special sense of humor. Point! Conclusion: This record gets the full number of points and it deserves it! "
