Enno Friedrich Popkes came from a Krummhorn Baptist family . In his childhood he attended Sunday school in the Jennelter Baptist Church . In 1914 his parents moved with him to Ihrhove and joined the Baptist Congregation Ihr (today: Westoverledingen ). After his baptism , Enno Friedrich Popkes, whose musicality was discovered and promoted early on, became a member of this community and served it for many decades as an honorary organist and choir director. At his instigation, the community commissioned Eberhard Friedrich Walcker & Cie to build a new organ in 1931 .

From 1937 to 1951, was free Kirchler Popkes organ expert of the Evangelical Reformed Church in North West Germany , which was then still called the Evangelical Reformed Church of the Province of Hanover was wearing and based in Aurich (now empty ) had. Popkes' certificate for the organ in the Rysum church received special attention . The Rysum pastor had informed Popkes by letter on September 30, 1947 that an unknown person had stolen 21 pipes from the Rysum organ during the tenure of his predecessor. On October 1, 1947, Popkes made an appraisal for Rysum and found the loss of only 4 pipes that were still there in 1940. On April 6, 1948, the district church council wrote to the regional church council that Popkes had admitted his mistake after another visit and that 21 pipes had been stolen. The incident had caused quite a stir in the community and led to false suspicions.

Within the Federation of Evangelical Free Churches / Baptists , Enno Popkes gained fame as a composer, choirmaster and musical arranger of the 1950 hymn book " Faith Voice for Congregation and House" . Also in Celebrations and Praises (F&L), the current songbook of the Evangelical Free Churches and Free Evangelical Congregations , there are worship chants edited by Enno Popkes.
