Enoch Heiland (also: Heyland ; born August 26, 1582 in Weißenfels , † May 15, 1639 in Leipzig ) was a German legal scholar .

Life

Enoch was the son of the citizen and innkeeper in Weißenfels Wolfgang Heiland and his wife Rebecca (née Hermann; † 1589). After attending the school in Weißenfels, he was accepted into the Pforta electoral Saxon state school on October 19, 1596 . In 1602 he began studying at the University of Leipzig . The first three years he completed philosophical studies, among others with the mathematician and physicist Christoph Hunnich . Subsequently, he dealt with medical studies, but turned to the study of law under the leadership of Wilhelm Schmuck (1575–1634).

To this end, he frequented the lectures of Bonaventura Gaur at the University of Wittenberg from May 21, 1606 and, in the winter semester of 1607, those of Ilico Ummius (1581–1643) at the University of Jena . After returning to Leipzig, he acquired himself on May 9th. 1611 Licentiate and March 26, 1612 Doctor of Laws degree . He then worked as a lawyer at the Electoral Saxon Court of Appeal and in 1617 became an advocate at the spiritual consistory in Leipzig .

In 1621 he received the post of assessor at the law faculty of the Leipzig University. Here he was promoted to professor of the institutes on June 30, 1628 and was associated with a canon in the Naumburg monastery . On October 16, 1637, he also took over the professorship of the Codex and was associated with the position of canon in Merseburg . Heiland also worked as an assessor at the Leipzig Higher Court . In the winter semester of 1629 and 1637 he was the rector of the Leipzig Alma Mater . After his death, his body was buried on May 19, 1639 in the Paulinerkirche in Leipzig . A marble epitaph was built for him there .

Heiland married Margarethe Leyser on October 28, 1611 in Leipzig (born February 22, 1594 in Wittenberg, † January 14, 1662 in Leipzig), the daughter of the theologian Polycarp Leyser the Elder and his wife Elisabeth (née Cranach).
