Godofredo Enrique Sattler (born May 22, 1863 in Guadalajara (Mexico) , † November 6, 1944 in Bremen ) was a German surgeon in Bremen.

Life

Sattler was sent to Bremen by his parents in 1869 to be raised in German. He attended the Alte Gymnasium , but graduated from the Friedrichsgymnasium (Kassel) in 1882 . He studied medicine at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg , the Ruprecht Karls University of Heidelberg and the Friedrich Wilhelms University of Berlin . During his studies he became a member of the Vineta Heidelberg fraternity . After passing the state examination, he obtained a thorough, mainly surgical training. With a doctoral thesis with Vincenz Czerny , he was awarded Dr. med. PhD. His teachers also included Fritz von Bramann in Halle and, for a short time, Theodor Billroth in Vienna. In 1893 he settled in Bremen as a specialist in surgery and in the new field of orthopedics. The Association Hospital of the Red Cross soon appointed him as a surgical assistant. Until then, the doctors in the charitable hospitals were general practitioners who treated both internal and surgical patients. Sattler brought modern surgery to Bremen. His activity expanded in 1896 when he was appointed doctor at the children's hospital. He continued his practice, which was connected to a private clinic. In 1902 he was appointed director of the surgical clinic and found his life's work. He himself took over the theoretical training of the nursing staff, who were mainly provided by deaconesses and deacons of the Von Bodelschwingh Foundation Bethel . With the population increase in Bremen, the clinic built in 1890 became too small. The technical equipment did not meet the new medical requirements. Sattler drafted the plans for the expansion and modernization carried out in 1907/08. He procured the hospital's first X-ray machine. In 1910 he headed the 6th meeting of the Association of Northwest German Surgeons . The First World War he initially took as a medical officer, then as General upper physician and a consulting surgeon of an Army Corps in part. The Senate of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen awarded him the title of professor on April 1, 1915. Several of his assistants became heads of surgical hospital departments.
