The nodding willowherb ( Epilobium nutans ) is a species of willowherb ( Epilobium ) within the evening primrose family (Onagraceae). It occurs in Central and Southern Europe .

description

Vegetative characteristics

The nodding willowherb is a wintering green, perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 10 to 25 centimeters. It has a short-arched rhizome . During the flowering period it forms leafy runners above ground . The individually standing stems are unbranched, hang over during flowering, briefly arching upwards, angular and have two to four raised longitudinal ridges. The stems are curly haired at the top.

The leaves are opposite to the inflorescence. The lower leaves are short-stalked and have entire margins, the upper ones sit and are partially serrated. The leaf blade is 1 to 2 inches long and 0.2 to 0.8 inches wide, ovate and glabrous.

Generative characteristics

The flowering period extends from July to September. The inflorescence contains one to six flowers. The hermaphrodite flowers are radial symmetry up to 5 millimeters long and have a long tube. The axillary cup is closely covered with hairs with individual protruding glandular hairs in between. The crown is funnel-shaped and pale purple. The upright style ends in a keuligen scar .

The capsule fruit is 2 to 4 centimeters long, adjacent to it with glandless hairs with individual protruding glandular hairs. It is usually overrun with red. The seeds are 1.2 to 1.5 millimeters long, spindle-shaped with a finely humped surface. The tip has a short, translucent appendage.

The chromosome number is 2n = 36.

distribution

The nodding willowherb occurs in central and southern Europe . The nodding willowherb is found scattered in Central Europe, mainly in the Alps and the low mountain ranges. In Hesse and Saxony it is either extinct or lost. In Austria it is missing in Vienna, Burgenland and possibly Upper Austria.

It mainly thrives in spring locations. It grows in spring meadows and spring bogs on oozing, nutrient-rich, lime-poor clay soils . It occurs in the subalpine to alpine, more rarely in the montane altitude , mostly at altitudes from 750 to 2000 meters, less often up to 2450 meters. In the Allgäu Alps, it rises from 1500 meters at Grasgehren on the Riedberger Horn to 2150 meters at the southeast foot of the Widderstein .

In the plant sociological system, it is an association character of the Bryo-Philonotidetum seriatae from the Cardamino-Montion association , but also occurs in the subalpine Caricetum fuscae from the Caricion fuscae association.
