The Riedberger Horn (also Riedbergerhorn ) is 1787  m above sea level. NHN the highest mountain in the Hörnergruppe in the western Allgäu Alps . It lies between Balderschwang and Obermaiselstein in the Bavarian district of Oberallgäu ( Germany ).

geography

location

The Riedberger Horn rises as a striking grass mountain 4.4 km east-southeast of Balderschwang and 1.9 km northwest of the Riedbergpass , whose pass road connects Hittisau in Vorarlberg ( Austria ) in the west and Fischen im Allgäu in Bavaria in the east. The municipal boundaries of Balderschwang in the northwest, Bolsterlang in the northeast and Obermaiselstein in the south meet at the summit . The slightly lower eastern neighboring mountain is the tub head ( 1712.2  m ).

About 300 m north-northeast of the main peak is a secondary peak ( 1754  m ) with a small transmitter. There the ridge forks to the northwest to the Dreifahnenkopf ( 1628  m ) with the Höllritzereck ( 1669.3  m ) on the other side and to the northeast to the Großer Ochsenkopf ( 1662  m ).

Natural allocation

The Riedberger Horn belongs to the natural spatial main unit group Flyschalpen (No. 94), in the main unit Vorarlberger and Westallgäu Flyschalpen (940) and in the subunit Northern Vorarlberg and Westallgäu Flyschalpen (940.0) to the natural area Riedberghorngruppe (940.00).

The landscape falls to the southwest into the valley of the (western) Bolgenach in the Balderschwanger Valley natural area (900.64), which is part of the main unit basin and valley floors in the western part of the Vorarlberg-Allgäu Alps (900) and the sub-unit valleys and basins in the catchment area of the Bregenzerach (900.6) ; to the east it falls through the valley of the (eastern) Bolgenach into the natural area Terrasse von Bolsterlang (901.01) and to the northeast into the valley of the Ostertalbach in the subunit of the valley of the Gunzesrieder Ach (901.4), both of which are part of the main unit of the basin and valley floors in the Eastern part of the Vorarlberg-Allgäu Alps (901). They all belong to the main unit group of basins and valley floors between the main groups of the Alps (90).

To the southeast, the landscape in the valley of the Schönberger Ach leads into the natural area Schrattenkalkgewölbe between Bolgenach and Hörnlesbach (950.1), which belongs to the main unit group Northern Limestone-West Alps (95) to the main unit Vorarlberg-Allgäuer Quintner und Schrattenkalkgewölbe (950).

To the northwest, the landscape leads over the Höllritzer Eck in the valley of the Stubenbach into the sub-unit Siplingerkopf -schichtkamm (960.2), which belongs to the main unit group Swiss and Allgäu Nagelfluhschichtkämme (96) to the main unit Allgäuer Nagelfluhschichtkämme (960).

Rhine-Danube and European main watershed

The main European watershed runs over the Riedberger Horn, the Schönbergjoch to the southeast (approx.  1345  m ), an elevation about 250 m southwest of this mountain crossing ( 1360  m ) and the Schafkopf ( 1627  m ) to the southeast . On its course between the catchment areas of two rivers of the same name - (western) Bolgenach (Weißach) and (eastern) Bolgenach (hamlet Ach)  - the mountain is one of the highest peaks north of the Ifen and the Gottesacker plateau.

About 3.8 km south-southeast of the Riedberger Horn and 1.9 km south of the Riedberg Pass, the (western) Bolgenach rises at the southern foot of the Schafkopf, which runs the western side of the mountain and the ridge to the Heidenkopf ( 1685  m ) through the Weißach , the Bregenz Ach as well as Lake Constance and the Rhine drained into the North Sea in a predominantly north-westerly direction .

In addition, north and south of the ridge between Riedberger Horn in the west and Wannenkopf in the east are the headwaters of both source brooks of the hamlet Ach : To the south-east of the Riedberger Horn there is a mountain stream fed by many brooks, which flows southwest of the Wannenkopf over the Grasgehren alpe, the Riedberg pass few Passes meters to the west and runs through the Ränker Tobel and then feeds the Schönberger Ach coming from the Schönbergjoch ; east-northeast of the mountain is the (eastern) Bolgenach, which is also fed by numerous mountain streams and flows north of the tub head. The water of both source streams, Schönberger Ach and (eastern) Bolgenach , flows through the Ach, Iller and Danube in a mainly east-southeast direction into the Black Sea . To the north of the above-mentioned secondary summit, the Ostertal also drains through the Ostertalbach and the Gunzesrieder Ach to the Iller.

geology

Geologically, the Riedberger Horn consists of the easily weatherable flysch , a soft, often damp rock layer that was created by weathering. This makes it one of the flower mountains of the Allgäu Alps.

Flora and fauna

Both blueberry and alpine rose populations can be found along the flanks of the Riedberger Horn . In winter, the grouse living in the knee wood slopes should not be disturbed.

Protected areas

Parts of the Hörnergruppe landscape protection area are located on the Riedberger Horn ( CDDA no. 395975; designated 1992; 68.2303  km² in size). Up to the high elevations of the north and east slopes, two spatially separated parts of the fauna-flora-habitat area Hörnergruppe (FFH no. 8527-301; 11.83 km²) extend.

Sports

To ski

The Riedberger Horn is valued as a ski mountain by ski touring fans because this mountain can be skied on all sides. Luis Trenker praised the survey as “Germany's most beautiful ski mountain”.

Under the Riedberger Horn, a total of five lifts open up the wide slopes in the basin of the Grasgehrenalpe. It is therefore also a small but snow-sure ski area. The valley station is at an altitude of 1,450 meters, the highest point at almost 1,700 meters. The downhill slopes are mostly easy to moderately difficult.

In the summer of 2016, the decision of the Bavarian State Government to approve a ski swing on the Riedberger Horn , even though the area is in the protected zone C of the Alpine plan, met with strong criticism . In 2018, however, the project was canceled by Prime Minister Söder and a "Center for Alpine Nature Experience" is to be created in its place.

hike

In the snow-free time, the Riedberger Horn is visited by hikers. A number of ascent options make the tours varied because you can choose a different side for the descent. The area around the Riedberger Horn is characterized as an “ideal, harmless hiking area” that “is also possible with children”. Only the ascent over the northeast ridge ( T3 ) is steep and somewhat more demanding .

On the wide, unwooded summit plateau there is a large cross where various hiking and ascent trails meet. From there, on a clear day, you have a panoramic view from Lake Constance over the mountains of the Bregenz Forest and the glaciers of the Schesaplana to the Lechtal Alps, the Nagelfluh chain , the bright chalk walls of the Gottesacker , the Allgäu main ridge and the Illertal up to the foothills of the Alps .

The Schwabenhütte of the Swabian Ski Club stands on a northern foothill of the Riedberger Horn at an altitude of 1500  m and the privately managed Grasgehrenhütte in the southeastern valley basin . On the south-western slope of the Riedbergerhorn, the two cultivated Alps Hörnle and Mittelalpe can be reached via hiking trails, both of which offer a view towards Kleinwalsertal and Hoher Ifen and westwards over the Bregenz Forest. In addition, in the north-eastern valley basin, the Bolgental, there is the serviced alpine hut of the Bolgenalpe and, further down the valley, the also serviced Zunkleiten Alpe.
